Courtroom Procedure Guide
Washington courts of limited jurisdiction move quickly. Know your role at each phase before you walk in.
The judge asks if there are any preliminary matters. This is your opportunity to raise discovery issues, move to exclude evidence, or request a continuance.
Your role:
Raise any discovery failures, motions to exclude, or continuance requests before the hearing begins.
Key phrases:
"Your Honor, I have a preliminary matter. I made a timely discovery demand under IRLJ 3.1 on [date], but the prosecution has not provided [specific item]. I move to exclude that evidence."
"Your Honor, I request a continuance. The prosecution failed to provide discovery at least 7 days before this hearing as required by IRLJ 3.1."
Your notes are not legal advice — they are your own observations for your personal case file.
